In a major political development ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, a powerful nationwide coalition has unveiled plans to endorse President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term in office.
The movement, led by the Coalition of Civil Society Organisations in Nigeria (COCSON), has grown into a vast alliance that stretches well beyond traditional civil society circles.
It now brings together more than 1,500 groups, including professional bodies, labour unions, artisan associations, community organisations, and grassroots networks from across the country.
Participants span a wide spectrum of Nigerian society—ranging from human rights advocates and healthcare professionals to legal experts, traders, and skilled workers—highlighting the coalition’s broad and diverse base of support.
At the heart of this initiative is a landmark convention scheduled for May 17, 2026. Organisers say the event could become the largest political endorsement gathering in Nigeria’s history, as representatives from across the coalition convene to formally declare their support for Tinubu’s re-election bid.
In a striking show of grassroots mobilisation, the coalition also revealed that it has gathered 20 million signatures from Nigerians backing the President. According to organisers, the signatures reflect widespread national support cutting across regions, professions, and social groups.
The coalition attributes its endorsement to what it describes as significant progress in economic reforms, governance, and national stability under Tinubu’s administration.
Notably, the involvement of non-traditional actors—such as artisans, market groups, and labour unions—signals a growing political alignment that goes beyond elite or party-driven structures.
Analysts believe this development points to a shift in Nigeria’s political landscape, where influence is increasingly shaped by a blend of grassroots movements and professional constituencies, rather than traditional power blocs alone.
As the May convention approaches, attention is turning to how this large-scale alliance could reshape political narratives and sway public opinion ahead of the 2027 elections.More details about the event and participating groups are expected to emerge in the coming days.
