Dangut, a Nigerian and indigene of Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, officially took over as Registrar on October 1, 2026, following his appointment by the Council.
He succeeds Pateh Bah of The Gambia and will serve a five-year tenure running from October 2026 to September 2031.
His appointment was ratified by the Council, WAEC’s international governing body, at its 74th Annual Meeting held in Accra, Ghana, in March 2026.
Before his new appointment, Dangut served as Head of the Nigeria National Office of WAEC from October 2023 to September 2026.
Born on October 2, 1967, in Mbar District of Bokkos Local Government Area, Dangut began his education in Plateau State, attending Government Secondary School, Riyom, and Government Science School, Kuru.
He obtained a Bachelor of Agriculture degree in Animal Production from the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, in 1991, followed by a Master of Science in Animal Science from the University of Ibadan in 1994.
He later earned a PhD in Animal Science from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, in 2017, and a Master of Education in Administration and Planning from the National Open University of Nigeria in 2020.
Dangut began his professional career in education in 1994 at St Louis College, Jos, where he worked as a teacher and WAEC examiner before joining the examination council in 1998.
During his nearly three decades at WAEC, he served in several capacities, including Assistant Registrar/Subject Officer in the Test Development Division, Head of Examinations Security and Deputy Branch Controller in Uyo and Bauchi, Branch Controller in Yola, Controller of the Post-Examinations Department, and Zonal Coordinator of the Ikeja Zonal Office.
He became Deputy Registrar in 2018 and subsequently served in the Head of National Office before being appointed to lead WAEC at the regional level.
According to WAEC, Dangut has extensive experience in test development, examination administration and post-examination activities. The council also said he has used Information and Communications Technology to improve its examination processes.
During his tenure as Head of the Nigeria National Office, he was associated with the rollout of Computer-Based WASSCE, the serialisation of question papers and the introduction of a Digital Electronic Marking System.
He also oversaw initiatives including the Digital Certificate Portal, WAEC E-Study Platform and Digital Records Archive, as well as systems supporting examination logistics and the monitoring of examiners.
Dangut has also served on the governing boards of institutions including the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), the Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB) and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
He has published academic works in national and international journals and presented papers at various conferences and professional forums.
With his assumption of office, Dangut becomes responsible for coordinating WAEC’s operations across its five member countries — Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, The Gambia and Liberia — from the council’s headquarters in Accra, Ghana.
