A broad coalition of artisans, youths, students, businessmen and professionals in Adamawa State has thrown its weight behind Senator Aminu Iya Abbas as its preferred aspirant for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship ticket ahead of the 2027 election.
The endorsement was announced in a joint statement issued on Wednesday in Yola and signed by Comrade Aliyu Liman of the Artisans Association of Adamawa State, Aisha Abdullahi of the Coalition of Adamawa Youth for Good Governance, Engr. Murktar Adamu of the Adamawa Businessmen’s Forum, and Dr. Lawal Abdullahi of the Adamawa Professionals Network.
The coalition described Senator Abbas as a tested and visionary leader with an impressive record of grassroots impact and service delivery across the state.
According to the statement, the groups said they were united by a strong belief that Abbas possesses the experience, credibility and popular appeal needed to steer Adamawa towards greater development.
“We have closely observed Senator Abbas’s unparalleled track record of service, leadership, and transformative impact,” the statement read, noting that his performance has earned him widespread respect among citizens.
The coalition highlighted his years of service, especially his representation of Adamawa Central Senatorial District, which they said has reflected commitment to inclusiveness, development and good governance.
They recalled that Abbas served two terms in the Adamawa State House of Assembly between 2011 and 2019, where he held several leadership positions including Deputy Minority Leader, Minority Leader, Deputy Chief Whip, Chief Whip and Chairman of key committees.
His emergence as Speaker of the 7th Adamawa State House of Assembly from 2019 to 2023, the groups noted, further demonstrated his legislative strength and leadership capacity.Since his election to the Senate in 2023 under the PDP, Abbas has continued to make his mark through effective lawmaking and oversight.
As Chairman of the Senate Committee on Science, Technology and Innovation, and a member of 15 other committees, he has sponsored and supported bills focused on education, healthcare, technology advancement and institutional reforms.
Among the bills attributed to him are proposals for the establishment of a Federal College of Health Technology in Song, a Federal College of Education (Technical) in Hong, and a Federal Institute for Technology and Innovation in Adamawa State.
The coalition also referenced his sponsorship of the National Hajj Commission Act (Amendment) Bill and his motion on electricity billing reform, which was adopted by the Senate.Special attention was drawn to his motion on flood control in Adamawa, addressing recurring destruction linked to the River Benue and releases from the Lagdo Dam.
The groups said his advocacy for the construction of the Dasin Hausa Dam remains a life-saving intervention for communities in Fufore, Yola North, Yola South, Girei, Numan, Lamurde and Demsa.Beyond his legislative duties, Senator Abbas was commended for facilitating constituency projects such as rural electrification, school construction, water supply schemes, road works and solar street lighting across several local government areas.
The statement also credited him with interventions in youth employment, federal appointments and security recruitment, describing them as evidence of his commitment to human capital development.
The coalition further praised his economic empowerment programmes, noting that thousands of women and youths have benefited from grants, SME support, scholarships and humanitarian initiatives.They added that Abbas’ professional background as a chartered accountant, certified fraud examiner and forensic expert gives him an edge in managing public resources effectively and tackling corruption.
The groups concluded by urging the PDP leadership to rally behind Senator Abbas, insisting that he represents the party’s strongest chance of victory in 2027.
“We call on all Adamawa people to rally behind him and urge the PDP leadership to award him the governorship ticket, as he is undoubtedly the best choice to secure a resounding victory and lead our state to greater heights,” the statement declared.
