Chief Ayuba Burki Gufwan

Philanthropist, Civil Rights Activist, and Executive Director of Beautiful Gate Handicapped Peoples Center in Jos, Chief Ayuba Burki Gufwan, has urged the Federal and State Governments in Nigeria to prioritize the interests of persons living with disabilities in their policies and programs.

He emphasized that this would help individuals with disabilities feel a sense of belonging as legitimate citizens of the country.

In a statement issued on Wednesday in Jos to mark the June 12th, 2024 Democracy Day Celebration, Chief Gufwan called on President Tinubu and the Governors of the 36 States to make the needs of persons living with disabilities a top priority.

He expressed concern that individuals with disabilities have not been adequately included in government initiatives thus far.

He stated, “While I commend and congratulate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR and the Governors of the 36 States on the occasion of the June 12th, 2024 Democracy Day Celebration, it is important to bring attention to the dire living conditions faced by persons living with disabilities nationwide. These individuals, who have actively participated in the democratic process, have yet to see tangible improvements in their lives under this administration.”

“There appears to be a systematic national neglect of the struggles faced by persons living with disabilities. Even in budgeting and program implementation, there is a lack of intentional efforts to involve individuals with disabilities. It is crucial for concrete actions to be taken to change this narrative.”

Chief Gufwan  also emphasized the need for the proper implementation and enforcement of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act across the country to safeguard the rights of individuals with disabilities and prevent any violations. He urged for swift prosecution of offenders to deter future discrimination.

“It is common knowledge that the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act has been in effect in Nigeria for years. However, persons living with disabilities have yet to experience the full benefits of the law and the established structures, even in states that have adopted the law, there is still a need for full compliance and enforcement to ensure individuals with disabilities receive the necessary attention they deserve.” He noted.

He called on all stakeholders and the public to support persons living with disabilities in reaching their potential, emphasizing that they are human beings with rights. Chief Gufwan encouraged efforts to assist individuals with disabilities in earning a living, rather than merely pitying them.
