Kanam Chairman Expands Primary Healthcare Access to Kyansar, Gagdi Communities

Residents of Kyansar and Gagdi wards in Kanam Local Government Area are beginning to experience improved access to primary healthcare services following the construction and upgrading of health facilities by the administration of Executive Chairman, Hon. Ayuba Salihu Musa.

The newly constructed Primary Healthcare Centres in the two wards, alongside the remodeling of existing facilities, are aimed at reducing the long distances residents previously travelled to access basic medical care — particularly maternal and child health services.

For years, several rural communities in Kanam relied on distant facilities, a situation that posed challenges for pregnant women, children, and the elderly.

The new interventions are expected to ease that burden and strengthen grassroots healthcare delivery.Speaking on the projects, Hon. Musa said the focus of his administration is to ensure equitable access to essential services across all wards of the local government area.

Healthcare is not a privilege but a basic right, and communities in hard-to-reach areas deserve the same level of medical attention as those in urban centres, he stated, adding that the facilities were designed to serve residents sustainably.

Community leaders in the benefiting wards described the development as timely.Alhaji Gado Yakubu, Madadki Gagdi, said the presence of a functional health facility within the community would significantly reduce emergency risks previously associated with travelling long distances for treatment.

He noted that the provision of accommodation for health workers would further enhance service delivery.Similarly, the Sarki of Kyansar said access to maternal healthcare had long been a concern for residents, explaining that the new centre offers a safer alternative for expectant mothers within the ward.

The healthcare interventions form part of broader efforts by the Kanam LGA administration to strengthen basic service delivery at the grassroots level.

With rural access to healthcare remaining a major development challenge in many parts of Plateau State, such investments are increasingly viewed as critical to improving health outcomes.

As implementation continues, the sustainability of staffing, equipment maintenance, and medical supplies will be key to ensuring the facilities deliver long-term impact.
