The Chairman of Langtang North Local Government Area, Hon. Pirfa Jingfa Tyem, has assured residents of renewed efforts to tackle insecurity following a series of condolence visits to families affected by recent tragedies in the area.
Tyem gave the assurance while visiting the family of the slain District Head of Kwallak, Ponzhi Kwallak, also known as Patrick Vongtim, whose death in a suspected robbery attack has heightened concerns over safety in the community.
Speaking during the visit, the chairman described the killing as disturbing and unacceptable, noting that it underscores the urgent need to address criminal activities threatening peaceful coexistence. He also delivered the sympathies of Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, to the bereaved family and the Tarok traditional institution.
While urging residents to remain calm, Tyem emphasised the importance of conducting a peaceful burial for the late traditional ruler, adding that the circumstances surrounding his death should strengthen collective resolve against insecurity.
The council chairman linked rising crime to weakening social values and called on families and community leaders to play a more active role in mentoring young people and discouraging deviant behaviour.
He further disclosed that the local government would intensify collaboration with security agencies and traditional rulers, with plans to introduce proactive strategies, including joint patrols, to enhance safety across communities.
In his response, the Acting Ponzhi Tarok, Ponzhi Zinni Nimnan Langnim, commended the chairman for identifying with the community at a difficult time. He noted that the incident reflects broader societal challenges and urged households to be more deliberate in instilling discipline and responsibility in children.
Langnim also stressed that tackling insecurity requires grassroots participation, calling for stronger cooperation among residents, community leaders and authorities.
Other stakeholders, including business operators and commercial motorcycle riders, were advised to remain vigilant and avoid providing shelter or support to individuals involved in criminal activities.
The Councillor representing Kwallak Ward, Hon. Yilkur Isa, condemned the killing and called for sustained efforts to improve security, while appreciating the support shown by the state government and local authorities.
During a separate visit, Tyem also commiserated with the family of the late Adama Danga, describing her passing as a painful loss and urging unity and resilience among residents.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to working with relevant stakeholders to strengthen security and promote peaceful coexistence in Langtang North.
