Margaret Inusa Yahaya has emerged as the governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Plateau State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
She was endorsed through a consensus and affirmation process during the party’s governorship primary held on Tuesday at the Tanjuriel Elite Stars Model Academy School Hall along Old Airport Road in Jos.
Her emergence followed consultations among party stakeholders, zonal leaders, supporters, and officials, with delegates across the state’s zonal congresses unanimously backing her candidacy.
Speaking to journalists after the exercise, Yahaya described her emergence as a call to serve the people of Plateau State rather than a contest centred on gender.
According to her, leadership should be determined by competence, capacity, and a genuine commitment to addressing the challenges facing the people.
She noted that this is her second attempt at the governorship seat, having previously contested in 2019.

“We are not talking about whether women can do better than men. What matters is potential, ability, and the willingness to deliver what the people truly need,” she said.
Yahaya expressed concern over the insecurity, killings, and economic hardship affecting several communities across the state, including Riyom, Barkin Ladi, Bassa, Mangu, Wase, and Bokkos local government areas.
She said that, if elected, her administration would focus on the welfare and security of residents under a “People First” agenda.
The SDP candidate also highlighted the important role women play in peacebuilding and governance, noting that they often bear the heaviest burden during periods of crisis and conflict.

Describing herself as a pastor, mother, and ambassador of peace, Yahaya said her compassion and life experience would shape her approach to leadership.
She urged Plateau residents to support the SDP, promising what she called a fresh political direction for the state.
Also speaking, Plateau State SDP Chairman, Zim Philip Jibi, described the party as a symbol of hope and renewal for the people of Plateau.
“Our message is simple and clear: Plateau people, there is a new dawn on the Plateau, and that new dawn is SDP,” he said.
