Mutfwang, scholars celebrate Tyoden’s legacy of integrity, principled leadership

Governor Caleb Mutfwang, academics, and political leaders on Tuesday paid glowing tributes to former Deputy Governor of Plateau State and ex-Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, Prof. Sonni Tyoden, describing him as a rare leader whose life embodied integrity, humility, and intellectual excellence.

The tributes came during the maiden memorial lecture organised in his honour by the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Jos, with the theme: “The Man Tyoden: Ideas, Power, and Governance.”

Speaking at the event through his deputy, Ngo Josephine Piyo, Governor Mutfwang said the late professor represented a generation of leaders who viewed public office as a platform for service rather than personal gain.

He noted that Tyoden successfully combined scholarship with politics without compromising his values, adding that his contributions to governance and national development would continue to inspire future generations.

“In a time when public confidence in institutions continues to face serious challenges, the life and legacy of Professor Sonni Tyoden remain a moral compass,” the governor said.

“He proved that one could participate in politics without compromising integrity, occupy public office without losing intellectual depth, and wield influence without abandoning humility.”

Mutfwang further described the late academic as a man of wisdom and calm disposition whose commitment to dialogue, peace, and responsible governance helped shape political leadership in Plateau State and beyond.

Delivering the keynote lecture, Prof. Emeritus Olugbemiro Jegede stressed the need for leaders to exercise power with humility and accountability.

“Power without humility becomes dominion,” he said, noting that governance should always serve the people.

Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, Prof. Ishaya Tanko, described Tyoden as a distinguished scholar and administrator whose impact on the institution and society remained significant.

Former Plateau State Governor, Sen. Simon Lalong, represented by Prof. Danladi Atu, also hailed Tyoden as a disciplined and principled statesman who mentored many younger academics and professionals.

The memorial lecture attracted academics, political leaders, students, former and serving university administrators, as well as members of the university community who reflected on Tyoden’s enduring legacy in academia and public service.
