Experts Warn of Growing Digital Divide at UNIJOS Conference

Experts have raised concerns over the widening digital divide and its implications for governance and inclusive economic growth at the 3rd International Conference on Management Science Research (ICMSR 2026) hosted by the University of Jos.

The conference, which began on May 4 at the Faculty of Management Sciences Auditorium, Naraguta Campus, Jos, has attracted scholars, researchers, and students from over five countries.

Delivering the keynote address, Professor Dr H Gin Chong described digital transformation as a structural shift reshaping economies, institutions, and governance systems globally. He noted, however, that its benefits remain uneven due to disparities in infrastructure, digital skills, and regulatory frameworks.

He identified key challenges, including cybersecurity threats, data privacy concerns, and the growing dominance of large digital platforms, and called for stronger policies, inclusive systems, and enhanced international collaboration.

The conference, themed “Driving Digital Transformation and Sustainable Governance: Strategies for Inclusive Growth in a Dynamic Global Economy,” features a PhD colloquium, paper presentations, and parallel sessions, with over 70 research papers slated for presentation.

Representing the Vice Chancellor, Professor Tanko Ishaya, the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Peak Charles Onochie, underscored the importance of research in addressing emerging societal challenges, noting that the conference provides a platform for generating ideas that could inform policy and national development.

Earlier, the Dean of the Faculty of Management Sciences, Professor Yohanna Jugu, said the conference aims to foster collaboration among scholars in tackling pressing management and governance issues, particularly within Nigeria’s economic context.

In her welcome address, the conference chairperson, Professor Teresa Nmadu, said participants from countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Malaysia, and Uganda are taking part in the event.

She added that discussions at the conference are focusing on digital innovation, sustainability reporting, risk management, and financial inclusion.

Some participants described the conference as timely. A postgraduate student, Sati Nanpan, said it provided insights into the application of digital transformation across sectors such as agriculture, education, and healthcare.

Another participant, Hozong Ayuba, highlighted the opportunity to learn from international experts on emerging global trends.

The conference is expected to produce scholarly publications and policy recommendations aimed at advancing digital transformation, strengthening governance, and promoting sustainable development. It will conclude on May 7.
