At least three persons have been killed and another injured in a fresh attack on Nyamgo Gyel community in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, less than 48 hours after the visit of Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the state.
The victims—Luka Sandu Pam, 36; Samuel Davou, 38; and Deme Saidu, 35—were reportedly ambushed at about 7:00 p.m. on Friday while returning from Gero on a motorcycle. The attack, which occurred on Good Friday, has left the community in mourning.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the victims were among a group of about 15 youths returning from a mining site when they encountered the assailants.
The Gyel Youth Leader, Dung Davou, said the group came under sudden attack by suspected armed herdsmen, forcing members to flee in different directions as gunshots rang out, leaving three dead.
Reacting to the incident, the Chairman of the Berom Youth Moulder Association, Solomon Dalyop, condemned the killings, describing them as a troubling sign of worsening insecurity in Plateau State.
He noted that the victims had gone out to observe Good Friday before they were attacked on their way home, describing the development as deeply distressing.
Dalyop disclosed that community leaders had recently held a security meeting with members of the Fulani community at a Nigerian Army Sector 2 Command in Jos South, where concerns were raised over suspicious movements around Gero, Rafin Bauna and Dutsen Kura in the Miyango-Bassa axis.
He added that residents had been advised to remain vigilant, particularly at night, following reports of unfamiliar persons in the area.He warned that the situation could deteriorate if urgent steps are not taken, alleging that armed groups have taken over bushes in parts of the state while security presence in vulnerable communities remains inadequate.
Following the attack, only police personnel were said to have responded, evacuating the injured victim to a nearby hospital.Residents have called for increased deployment of security personnel and proactive measures to forestall further attacks, as the community has already commenced burial rites for the deceased.
Efforts to reach the Plateau State Police Command for official confirmation were unsuccessful as of press time.
The latest incident adds to growing concerns over persistent violence in Plateau State and the safety of residents amid ongoing security challenges.
