Jos – The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has committed to enhancing the pension package for its retired officers while also maintaining the deployment of advanced technology aimed at bolstering border security and migration management, particularly through automated visa insurance and passport application processes.
These commitments were announced over the weekend during the closing ceremony of the NIS Comptroller General Annual Conference 2024, which centered on the theme: “Enhancing Border Security and Migration Management in a Globalized World: Challenges and Opportunities for Nigeria.”
During the presentation of the seven-point resolution, Comptroller General of NIS, Kemi Nandap, indicated that these decisions followed extensive discussions involving 448 participants and delegates over the course of the three-day event held in Jos, Plateau State.
She stated “The conference resolved that the Service shall continue to collaborate and synergize with relevant agencies and stakeholders.
“The Service shall sustain the deployment of relevant cutting-edge technology to improve border security and migration management through automated visa insurance and passport application processes. Furthermore, a strategic plan will be drawn that aligns with the Federal Government of Nigeria’s initiatives on foreign direct investments and tourism to attract enhanced funding.”
“The Service shall restructure and improve operations at the Divisions of Immigration Offices in all 774 local government areas in the country to strengthen intelligence and proactive engagement with border communities in Nigeria, and shall, in line with the tenets of the Renewed Hope Agenda, engage in other processes, re-engineering and develop a strategic plan to promote professionalism, patriotism, discipline, and similar, service to people.
“The Service shall continue to sustain the in-built motivation of staff as a priority objective, including training and capacity building for officers and men to enhance knowledge acquisition, and professionalism, and thus shall prioritize the need to have an enhanced pension package for retired officers. The Service will upon resolutions made, deploy proactive strategies and sustainable reforms to reposition the Service towards delivering on its statutory mandate and enhance national security.”
The closing ceremony was graced by Plateau State Deputy Governor, Josephine Piyo, who praised the NIS for convening the conference.
She noted that the discussions fostered valuable insights and contributions that would significantly influence the nation’s approach to border governance.
Piyo remarked, “Throughout this conference, you have delved deep into the complexities of border security and immigration management in an increasingly interconnected and interdependent world. You have explored the challenges that Nigeria faces in safeguarding its borders, managing immigration flows, and addressing the diverse needs of migrants and refugees.”
She continued, “It has become evident that existing modules for securing our borders are becoming obsolete. It is our responsibility as progressive thinkers to adapt and remain proactive. Our borders extend beyond land, sea, and air; hence, preparation for the new frontier of cyberspace is essential. As a government tasked with leading change, we must develop strategies for the tactical management of this digital border to ensure our security and prosperity.”
Concluding her address, Piyo acknowledged the formidable nature of the tasks ahead, asserting that while challenges are real, so too are the opportunities.
“By collaborating, sharing knowledge and best practices, and fostering cross-border cooperation, we can enhance our capacity to manage migration effectively and ensure the security and well-being of our nation.” She emphasized.
