NGO Demands School Safety, Integrity Tests for Buildings in Jos

Authorities have been called upon to conduct integrity tests on school buildings and report unsafe practices surrounding schools to ensure every child has a safe place to learn and grow. The plea came during a peace walk in Jos on 24th July 2024, organized by The Ike Odoeme Foundation, an Abuja based NGO. The walk, which included women and youths in Jos, took place from Old Airport Junction to Secretariat Junction.

Speaking to journalists after the walk, Mrs. Sarah Dalut, Chairperson of the Women Wing Christian Association of Nigeria (Plateau State Chapter), emphasized the critical need for safe educational spaces. She stated, “Any issues within the learning environment, whether in primary schools, secondary schools, or higher institutions, must be addressed. Life is precious and irreplaceable, so we must protect ourselves and each other. Be vigilant and speak out if you notice any hazards. Our children are our future.”

Suzie Agas, Programs Officer at the Ike Odoeme Foundation, outlined the foundation’s ongoing efforts and stressed the importance of accountability. She said, “We visited the victims in the hospital on Monday to show them our support. The victims are from the same school collapse incident. As part of governance, we are here to ensure relevant stakeholders are held accountable for the collapse and to prevent future incidents.”

Agas also praised the state government for its proactive measures in response to the incident. ,”The Plateau State government has already inaugurated a 10-month committee to investigate the collapse. We are leveraging the government’s efforts to ensure comprehensive accountability.” She added.
Furthermore, Ms. Christiana Dazong from the Victoria Rhema Family Foundation expressed gratitude and urged continued support for the children affected by the tragedy.

“I want to say a very big thank you to the Victoria Rhema Family Foundation. Working with many children, I look forward to helping them. I urge the governor and the government of Plateau State to support these children, not just the ones we have lost but the upcoming ones as well.” She said.
