Olu Jacobs dies at 84: Nollywood mourns veteran actor

Veteran Nigerian actor, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84.

The renowned actor died on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, with news of his passing confirmed by his family.

Jacobs, who was born on July 11, 1942, was one of Nigeria’s most respected actors, having built a career spanning theatre, television and film.

He became a familiar face to generations of Nigerians through his numerous roles in Nollywood films and television productions. His deep voice, commanding presence and versatility made him one of the most recognisable figures in the Nigerian entertainment industry.

His death also brings to an end a remarkable career that stretched across several decades and included both Nigerian and international productions.

Jacobs was married to veteran actress Joke Silva, and the couple remained one of the best-known partnerships in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.

His passing comes after several false reports of his death had circulated on social media in previous years. Those reports were repeatedly dismissed by his family, with Silva publicly confirming on earlier occasions that her husband was alive.

Jacobs was also honoured by the Nigerian government in 2014 with the national award of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) for his contribution to the country’s arts and entertainment industry.

His death is expected to trigger tributes from colleagues, fans and other Nigerians who watched his career over the years.

The family has appealed to the public to respect its privacy as it mourns the veteran actor.
