The Coalition for Equity and Good Governance, alongside religious leaders and concerned citizens, has come out in strong condemnation of inflammatory statements and misleading social media posts following the recent violence in Mangun, Mangu Local Government Area.
The coalition has expressed full support for Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s ongoing peace initiatives and commended his proactive efforts to restore safety and harmony across the state.
During a press conference held in Jos on July 11, 2025, coalition leaders Pastor John Zakari and Salisu Abdullahi clarified that Plateau State should not be mischaracterized as a hotbed of religious conflict.
Instead, they stressed that the state has long stood as a model of peaceful coexistence. The recent attacks, they explained, are not rooted in religious strife but are the result of ongoing acts of genocide and land grabbing that have displaced countless families from their ancestral homes.
Condemnation of Mob Violence
The coalition unequivocally condemned the mob violence in Mangun, labeling it a reprehensible act of criminality. While acknowledging the tragic nature of the incident, the group suggested that such outbursts are symptomatic of the broader violence affecting the region, driven by forces that are neither religious nor ethnic, but largely economic in nature.
Rejection of Misinformation
The coalition also addressed the rising tide of misinformation, calling on both international organizations and the federal government to disregard any narrative that portrays Plateau as anti-religious.
The state, they emphasized, is a symbol of peaceful coexistence, where Muslims, Christians, and people of various ethnicities live in harmony. They urged the public to resist divisive rhetoric that seeks to tarnish the reputation of the state.
Praise for Governor Mutfwang’s Efforts
The group praised the creation of the Plateau State Inter-Religious Advisory Council, which seeks to promote unity, tolerance, and social cohesion. They also acknowledged Governor Mutfwang’s efforts in attracting investment and bolstering the state’s economy, pointing out that such initiatives have contributed to the state’s continued progress and stability.
Call for Enhanced Security Measures
In light of the recent events, the coalition urged security agencies to take more proactive steps in preventing such violence. They suggested that practical measures, such as advising travelers to avoid night journeys and ensuring thorough checks at security checkpoints, could help mitigate future incidents.
A Plea for National Unity
The coalition concluded by calling for greater national unity, stressing the need for all Nigerians to work toward peace and unity. They highlighted the importance of fostering peaceful coexistence and urged individuals to avoid spreading harmful narratives that could further destabilize Plateau State.
By presenting a united front and addressing the root causes of these conflicts, the coalition aims to steer the state and its people toward a future defined by peace, development, and mutual respect.
