To mark United Nations Day 2024, Mrs. Nanbam Esther Danjuma-Lot, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Coordinator for Plateau State, has urged a stronger commitment to sustainable development initiatives across the state.
In a statement commemorating the global occasion, Mrs. Danjuma-Lot highlighted the importance of collective responsibility in advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
She noted that the day serves as a reminder of the shared duty to build a more inclusive and sustainable world.
Reflecting on Plateau State’s progress under Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, she pointed to notable strides in poverty alleviation, clean water access, renewable energy, and education.
She stated “Under the visionary leadership of His Excellency, Barrister Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, we are making significant strides in climate resilience, economic empowerment, and social development,”
“Sustainable development is critical for tackling poverty, hunger, and ensuring access to quality education and clean water.
Our partnerships with international bodies, including the United Nations, play a key role in advancing projects that improve the well-being of our communities.”
Regarding climate change, Mrs. Danjuma-Lot stressed that the Plateau State government is adopting measures to address environmental challenges.
“Climate change remains one of the greatest threats to humanity,” she warned.
“We are intensifying efforts through afforestation, sustainable agricultural practices, and climate-smart infrastructure.
“These strategies, she said, align with the SDG 13 (Climate Action) goal, ensuring that Plateau State builds resilience while preserving biodiversity and enhancing community livelihoods.
“Our focus is to safeguard the environment for future generations and guarantee a sustainable future for all,” she emphasized.
Additionally, Mrs. Danjuma-Lot reaffirmed Plateau State’s dedication to gender equality and social justice, echoing the importance of SDGs 5 and 16.
She called on all citizens to engage actively in the state’s sustainable development efforts, envisioning Plateau as a model of sustainable growth for Nigeria.
“Our agenda ensures that everyone, regardless of gender, has equal access to opportunities. We are committed to promoting human rights and fostering inclusive institutions that empower citizens,” she stated.
“True development requires all of us to take responsibility—whether through conservation, advocating for social justice, or promoting peace.”
“We aspire to build a Plateau State that not only achieves the Sustainable Development Goals but also serves as a model of sustainable development for Nigeria and beyond. Together, we can create a future where everyone can thrive.” Mrs. Danjuma-Lot added.
