The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (N&MCN) has charged 139 newly inducted nurses from the University of Jos to uphold professionalism, adhere to ethical standards, and embrace continuous learning in their careers.
Speaking at the 7th Induction and Oath-Taking Ceremony, the Registrar of the Council, Dr. Ndagi Al-Hassan, commended the graduates for their perseverance and dedication to the rigorous training.
Represented by Dr. Aliyu Adamu, Head of Planning, Research, and Statistics, he emphasized that nursing requires more than theoretical knowledge, stressing the importance of clinical competence and ethical responsibility.
“This ceremony is not just a formality but a significant transition into a noble profession. The Bachelor of Nursing Science program equips you with the necessary skills to provide safe and efficient healthcare services. Now that you are registered nurses, society expects you to uphold the highest standards,” he stated.
He reminded the inductees of their role in public health, disease prevention, and health promotion, urging them to collaborate with other healthcare professionals, adapt to medical advancements, and pursue further education to enhance their expertise.
Dr. Adamu also advised them to remain humble, learn from experienced colleagues, and accept corrections in their professional journey.
“Mastery takes time, but with dedication and a willingness to improve, you will grow into seasoned professionals that society can trust,” he added.
Congratulating the inductees, the Vice-Chancellor of UNIJOS, Prof. Tanko Ishaya, described nursing as a profession of resilience and compassion.
“We have provided the necessary infrastructure, facilities, and human resources to prepare you for the challenges and responsibilities ahead. As you step into the healthcare system, you must uphold the highest ethical standards, prioritize patient safety, and continuously seek knowledge to provide the best possible care,” he said.
Similarly, the Head of the Department of Nursing Science, Prof. Oluwatoyin A. Ogunyewo, highlighted the rigorous nature of the program, noting that graduates are intellectually sound and globally competitive.
He announced that after the February 2024 accreditation exercise, the Nursing and Midwifery Council awarded the department full accreditation status.
“For six consecutive times, our students have achieved a 100% pass rate in the Council’s final qualifying exams, reflecting our high training standards,” he added.
The ceremony featured the administration of the professional oath and the presentation of practicing licenses. Graduates were reminded to uphold ethics, prioritize patient safety, and continuously improve their skills.
