Bokkos Chairman Honoured with Peace and Youth Awards for Transformative Leadership

Chairman of Bokkos Local Government Council, Hon. Amalau Samuel Amalau, has been honoured with two separate awards in recognition of his contributions to peacebuilding and youth empowerment in Plateau State.

The first, a “Puller of Peace” award, was conferred on him by the Plateau Impact Award at a ceremony held on June 29, 2025, at Odilins Event Centre in Jos.

According to the organisers, the award celebrates Hon. Amalau’s efforts in promoting peace and unity in Bokkos despite persistent security challenges that have troubled the region.

Just a day later, on June 30, the Plateau Bloggers and Online Media Association presented him with a Special Recognition Award for Youth Engagement during the World Social Media Day celebration at Fox Hotel, Jos.

The award was received on his behalf by his Chief of Staff, Luka Yavuruk.Speaking after receiving the honours, Hon. Amalau expressed gratitude to God and thanked the people of Bokkos for their cooperation.

I thank Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang for his support and the people of Bokkos for standing by us,” he said.

The killings and destruction will not help us. They only take us backward instead of forward.”

Despite the fragile security situation in parts of Bokkos, agriculture remains the mainstay of the local economy.

Hon. Amalau noted that over 95 percent of residents depend on farming and assured that his administration is working to ensure their safety and productivity.

He revealed that in collaboration with the state government, the local council recently launched a fertilizer distribution programme.

As part of the effort, the Chairman personally donated two trucks of fertilizer. Security personnel, he added, have also been deployed to accompany farmers to their fields.

We are doing everything possible to support our farmers and make the land safe again,” he said.

Beyond security and agriculture, Hon. Amalau also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to infrastructural development.

He said the council is working to improve pipe-borne water supply, rural road access, public schools, and electricity in underserved communities across Bokkos.

We want our people to benefit from democratic governance. Development must be felt by everyone,” he said.

Our vision is to restore the peace we once had—to make sure our people can move freely, go to their farms and markets, and live without fear.”

The dual recognition, coming within 48 hours, highlights the growing acknowledgment of Hon. Amalau’s efforts in governance and peacebuilding. For many in Bokkos, it is a sign that the tide may be turning toward recovery, reconciliation, and sustainable development.
