In a resounding call for justice and the preservation of democratic principles, the Northern Initiative for Peace and Economic Development, in collaboration with the 3in1 Coalition of Kano, Plateau, and Zamfara States, convened a world press conference in Plateau state, delivering an urgent appeal concerning the governorship election petition appeal judgments.
Addressing the media, the coalition made an urgent appeal for justice and respect for the popular mandate following the governorship elections held on March 18, 2023, in Kano, Plateau, and Zamfara. The coalition emphasized the importance of upholding the collective will of the people as expressed through the electoral process.
“We recognize the importance of a fair and impartial judiciary in upholding the rule of law and safeguarding democratic principles. The judiciary plays a critical role in ensuring justice, protecting citizens’ rights, and preserving the credibility of the electoral process,” stated the spokesperson of the coalition.
Highlighting the critical role of an impartial judiciary in upholding democratic values, the coalition stressed the need to protect citizens’ rights and the credibility of the electoral process. They warned against any actions that compromise these fundamental principles, stating that such actions undermine the foundation of democracy itself.
“The citizens of Kano, Plateau, and Zamfara have exercised their democratic rights, and their voices must be heard and honored. Attempts to undermine the sanctity of these elections not only jeopardize the democratic principles that Nigeria upholds but also erode public trust in the electoral process,” they expressed.
They also called upon all stakeholders, including electoral authorities and the judiciary, to ensure an unbiased and thorough judgment as the cases head to the Supreme Court following disputes arising from the appeal judgments.
“It is crucial that the legal processes be transparent, just, and free from any undue influence to preserve the democratic foundation on which our nation stands,” they stressed
Urging all involved parties to prioritize the greater good of the people and respect the election outcomes, the coalition emphasized that upholding the popular mandate is essential for the sustained growth and development of democratic values in Nigeria.
The statement, signed by Mr Abel Jilemsam, representative of the coalition, stressed the importance of peace and stability in Kano, Plateau, and Zamfara for Nigeria’s overall well-being.
