PLASIEC Announces New Timetable for 2026 Plateau Local Government Elections

The Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) has released a revised timetable for the 2026 Local Government Elections, set to take place across the state’s 17 councils on Wednesday, September 9, 2026.

The announcement was made on Friday during a press briefing at PLASIEC’s headquarters in Jos, where journalists and stakeholders were briefed on preparations ahead of the polls.

Speaking at the briefing, PLASIEC Chairman Mr. Plangji Daniel Cishak said the updated schedule is part of the commission’s legal mandate and is aimed at guiding political parties, candidates, and voters through the electoral process.

“As part of its mandate and in compliance with Sections 15, 19, 21 and 33 of the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission Law, 2024, Section 197(1)(B) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) and the Electoral Act, 2022, the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) wishes to notify the leadership of all political parties and the general public that elections shall be conducted in the Seventeen (17) Local Government Councils of Plateau State on Wednesday, 9th September, 2026, between 8.00am and 3.00pm,” he said.

According to the revised timetable, party primaries are scheduled for March 7–12, while political parties can collect nomination forms from March 13–17. Submission of completed forms will take place on March 18 and 19, with candidates’ details published on March 21.

Screening and verification of chairmanship candidates and their running mates will be conducted from March 23 to 24, while councillorship candidates will be screened between March 25 and 28.

The list of qualified candidates will be published on March 30, and any appeals will be received on March 31 and determined the following day. Campaigns by political parties will run from April 11 until September 7, just two days before the polls.

Cishak stressed that the election date falls within the legally allowed period for local government elections in Plateau State and reassured stakeholders of PLASIEC’s commitment to a transparent and credible process.

The chairman added that the commission has put mechanisms in place to handle disputes and will continue to engage all stakeholders to ensure smooth conduct of the 2026 local government elections.
