A group known as the Initiative For Better And Brighter Nigeria (IBBN) took to the streets of Plateau State on Thursday to participate in nationwide protests addressing hunger and hardship, despite the state government’s opposition to the demonstration.
Led by Convener Prophet Isa El Buba, the protesters marched peacefully from Secretariat Junction to the Old Airport Roundabout, waving Nigerian flags and holding placards with messages such as “There is hunger in the land,” “Bring back fuel subsidy,” and “Reverse electricity tariff.”
Joined by other civil society groups, Prophet Isa El Buba highlighted the demands of the protesters, which included good governance, accountability, and basic social amenities, the reversal of the removal of fuel subsidies, the high electricity tariffs, and the reduction of the high cost of living.
“This is the fight to the finish. It’s a fight for the soul of Nigeria, for your future, and for your descendants. Every Nigerian going through pain knows this is a fight to ensure we get the right governance in our nation.”
“We must end bad governance in Nigeria. When the right institutions are in place, there will be no more hunger in the land. The killing will stop. Our armed forces will enjoy their service to the people. We have left our comforts and conveniences to be here, and we are here to make a change. Nigeria must change.” He emphasized.
Also, Security personnel were deployed to oversee the protest, ensuring it remained peaceful. Meanwhile, additional demonstrators gathered at the British American Roundabout in Jos, where many businesses closed in solidarity with the movement.
The protests in Plateau State were part of a nationwide outcry against oppressive economic conditions and policies deemed detrimental to the well-being of citizens.
