The Plateau State Government has called on its youth, citizens, and residents to abstain from the planned nationwide protest on August 1st, citing concerns that participation could worsen ongoing hardships.
The appeal was made by Samuel Jatau, Secretary to the Government of Plateau State, during a sensitization meeting with community leaders. Jatau stressed that the administration of Governor Caleb Mutfwang is fully aware of the challenges faced by the populace due to the global economic crisis and the development policies inherited by President Bola Tinubu’s government.
Highlighting the administration’s proactive measures, Jatau pointed to significant investments in agriculture aimed at alleviating food shortages and combating hunger. He noted the introduction of bus services across major areas of the state, offering reduced fares of two hundred naira, irrespective of distance.
He stated “Governor Caleb Mutfwang has been consistent in pursuing the renewed hope agenda of President Bola Tinubu across all sectors of the economy. The governor is a sensitive and responsive leader who will continue to do his best to alleviate the sufferings of the people. The provision of farm inputs has improved farming, promising a bumper harvest. We have all witnessed the efforts of our proactive governor to address various challenges, including economic issues and insecurity.”
Additionally, Jeremiah Satmak, Chief of Staff to Governor Mutfwang, specifically urged young people to steer clear of the proposed protest, highlighting the state’s susceptibility to security threats.
Satmak underscored that the governor’s administration prioritizes the youth, with numerous appointments made within the cabinet aimed at fostering opportunities and achievements for the younger demographic. He also mentioned President Tinubu’s establishment of the Ministry of Livestock Development, intended to address the long-standing farmers/herders conflicts while enhancing livestock production and food security.
Furthermore, he pointed out the recent legislation approving a new national minimum wage of N70,000, which aims to improve the welfare of Nigerian workers.
Earlier, Hamisu Anani, Chairman of Wase Local Government Area and member of the Association of Local Government Chairmen (ALGON), reiterated that despite the significant challenges confronting Plateau State, particularly in terms of security, the proposed protest would not serve the state’s interests.
He urged the youth to reject the protest and work together for the betterment of the state. Anani also highlighted a recent Supreme Court ruling that grants financial autonomy to local government councils, acknowledging them as integral components of Nigeria’s political framework.
Meanwhile, Alex Audu, Coordinator of the Plateau Youth Council for the Central Zone, encouraged young people to concentrate on constructive efforts for the state, avoiding actions that could jeopardize its unity, peace, and progress.
