The Provost of the Federal College of Medical Laboratory Science and Technology (FCMLST), Prof. Sunday Obong Etukudoh, has commended the numerous health reforms embarked upon by the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
In just about two years, these reforms have created positive results at FCMLST, Jos, significantly boosting the health sector.Prof. Etukudoh made this known at the College after leading a team from the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) on an inspection tour of the facilities as part of a resource verification process in preparation for establishing new programs at the institution.
It is noteworthy that through his efforts, the institution was upgraded from the Federal School of Medical Laboratory Science and Technology to a federal college, which stands as a significant achievement.
During an interview after the inspection, Prof. Etukudoh noted that President Bola Tinubu has committed his administration to concrete actions and policies that are driving positive change in healthcare delivery across the country.
The College is leveraging these reforms to produce the best laboratory scientists for both local and international hospitals.
He emphasized the critical role that medical laboratory scientists play in ensuring adequate diagnosis and highlighted the success of Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda, thanks to the appointment of skilled Nigerians in key positions within the health sector.
“When you look at the background of Professor Mohamed Ali Pate, Dr. Tunji Alausa, and even the Permanent Secretary, Kacholom Shanti Daju, you’ll see that the Ministry of Health is blessed due to the innovative and excellent choice of personnel,” Prof. Etukudoh remarked.
“That has given the health sector a major boost, and we are internally grateful to Mr. President for that.”Prof. Etukudoh also discussed his own role in developing the Medical Laboratory Technology Technician program.
He emphasized that as a government appointee, his priority is to serve Nigeria’s interests rather than follow associations, aiming to ensure that Tinubu’s vision for a new hope for Nigerians is realized.
“I am very, very pleased with the work of the Executive Secretary in overseeing the resource verification and institutional accreditation of this program,” he said.
“It’s not only the Medical Laboratory Technician program being considered for accreditation; we also have the National Diploma (ND) in Public Health, Epidemiological Studies and Disease Control, and Environmental Health. All of these programs will produce positive outcomes that will assist the local government sector through the National Primary Health Development Agency, responsible for managing primary health centers.”
Prof. Etukudoh also praised the government’s commitment to completing infrastructure projects, some of which have been in progress since 1983.
He expressed hope that the completion of these projects would provide sufficient facilities for the College’s programs, ultimately allowing Nigeria to export knowledge globally, reducing the need for migration and benefiting both the country and the wider African continent.
Speaking earlier, Dr. Kubra Jauro, Deputy Director of Specialized Institutions Division at NBTE and team lead for the resource inspection, said her team was satisfied with the facilities at the College.
“We have toured the facilities, especially the medical lab facilities, which exceed our minimum requirements for establishing the programs. We are satisfied with what we have seen so far, as the College has adequate facilities for the programs,” she said.
FCMLST Jos, which has taken a pioneering status as the first institution to offer a National Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology, is now pursuing five accreditations—in Epidemiology and Disease Control, Public Health Technology, Environmental Health Technology, Medical Laboratory Technology, and Institutional Administration.
