Hon. Daniel Asama, the representative for Jos North/Bassa Federal Constituency, has launched an extensive relief initiative aimed at alleviating the suffering of displaced residents within his constituency. The distribution, which began recently, focuses on providing essential support to those who have been forced from their homes due to ongoing insecurity.
During the launch, Hon. Asama emphasized the urgent need for such assistance in his constituency.”This program is essentially to create succour for the hardship people are going through in the country at the moment. As a representative of Bassa/Jos North, I have heard so many cries. People painfully try to reach out all the time. My phone bursts with calls, and ninety percent of these calls are filled with pain from just meager issues. People just want small meals, just portions of food to eat. It’s so painful,” he said.
The initiative includes the distribution of vital items such as rice, semovita, spaghetti, Indomie noodles, and cooking oil, alongside school materials like shoes, bags, desks, chairs, and exercise books. Roofing sheets are also being provided to assist in rebuilding efforts for those displaced over the past year or two.
The initial distribution phase targeted approximately 50 beneficiaries, with additional batches planned in the coming days. “For today, we are distributing to about 50 beneficiaries in this area as part of the first tranche, with more to follow. The distribution is particularly aimed at people displaced around Yelwa Zangam, Tilden, the borders between Plateau and Bauchi State, and the Irigwe Axis. These are people who have been displaced over the past two years. While we may not be able to assist everyone, we will do our utmost to reach as many as possible,” he stated.
Regarding the funding for the program, Asama clarified, “If it were to be money, this is worth about 40 to 60 million naira. But it’s important to understand that it’s a constituency intervention program funded by the Commission for Refugee Council through the Ministry of Agriculture. We don’t get this money in cash. The intervention is facilitated through MDAs (Ministries, Departments, and Agencies) who manage the funds and projects.”
With over 16 years of experience in humanitarian service, including his tenure as the chairman of all orphanages in Plateau State, Asama noted that he is well aware of the challenges his constituency faces. “I have been a humanitarian for more than 16 years. Before I became a member of the House of Reps, I worked as the chairman of all the orphanages in Plateau State. So, I know exactly the travails and troubles that people are facing in this constituency,” he stated.
Beneficiaries of the distribution expressed their heartfelt gratitude for the support. Daniel Sunday, a beneficiary from Miango, shared his appreciation: “I am very happy and feel blessed to have been shown such appreciation. This is something I have not experienced before. I thank the Honorable and pray for God’s blessings on him. I hope that whatever he seeks in life, God will grant it to him.”
Similarly, Asabe Musa, another beneficiary, expressed her deep gratitude for the gesture, noting, “I am truly grateful for the support and pray for continued success for the Honorable in his office. This assistance will make a meaningful difference in our lives.”
