Jos North Local Government Council has inaugurated its first state-of-the-art ICT center to boost staff capacity, secure official documents, and generate additional revenue for the council.
The facility, unveiled by Hon. J.K. Chris, Chairman of Jos North Local Government, at the council secretariat, was commissioned by Dominic Datong Gwaman, Director General of the Plateau State Information and Communication Technology Development Agency (PICTDA).
Speaking at the commissioning, Hon. Chris highlighted the pressing need for the local government to adopt technology to improve efficiency and safeguard sensitive information.
He said, “Over the years, the council relied on external sources for printing official and confidential documents, exposing us to significant risks.
“This ICT center is a solution to such challenges, allowing us to handle sensitive documents internally. Being in a digital era, Jos North cannot afford to lag behind. This center will serve our staff and the wider community, helping them catch up with global trends.”
The chairman emphasized that the ICT center is part of several projects achieved in his first 100 days in office, which also include the remodeling of the legislative chamber and the renovation of critical boreholes to address water supply challenges in the area.
He added, “With Jos North’s growing population and cosmopolitan nature, access to water remains a priority. Renovating these boreholes ensures better access to clean water, improving public health and well-being.”
In his remarks, Dominic Gwaman commended the council for prioritizing technology and aligning with Plateau State’s vision for 2025 as a year of technological advancement.
He said, “The chairman has set a benchmark for other local governments to follow. Embracing technology at the grassroots level equips our children to adopt it early and enhances community development.
” PICTDA is committed to supporting this initiative through partnerships and collaborations to ensure its success.”
Dr. Yinka Oyengide, Chairman of the Nigerian Computer Society (Plateau State Chapter), praised the project as a catalyst for technological growth on the Plateau.
“This initiative isn’t just about investing in equipment; it’s about building human capacity and creating a ripple effect on the local economy. We are proud to see grassroots leadership take the lead in advancing technology.” He noted.
The ICT center, described as the first of its kind in Jos North, is expected to provide affordable services for residents while enhancing the council’s operational efficiency.
Stakeholders expressed optimism that this initiative would inspire similar developments across other local governments in Plateau State.
