The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has suspended operations on the Warri–Itakpe Train Service (WITS) due to operational and technical issues.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the corporation said the decision was based on recommendations from its engineers and would allow for critical assessments along the rail corridor.
According to the NRC, the temporary suspension is part of ongoing efforts to enhance safety, improve reliability, and strengthen service delivery on the route connecting parts of Delta, Edo, and Kogi states.
“The temporary suspension has become necessary to enable the corporation to carry out critical operational assessments aimed at ensuring continued safety, reliability, and improved service delivery on the corridor,” the statement read.
The corporation added that its engineers are already working to resolve the identified issues and assured passengers that an update on the resumption of services would be provided before the end of the week.
While apologising for the inconvenience the disruption may cause commuters and businesses that depend on the service, the NRC said every effort is being made to restore operations as quickly as possible.
The agency also reiterated its commitment to delivering safe, reliable, and efficient rail transport services across the country.
The suspension comes just days after the Federal Government announced a 50 per cent reduction in train fares for travellers during the Sallah celebrations.
The fare cut was announced in a statement by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Funsho Adebiyi, who said the measure was introduced to help reduce transportation costs for Nigerians travelling during the festive season.
