NMA arrests fake doctor in Plateau

The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) Plateau State chapter has apprehended an man posing as a medical doctor and operating within the state.


In a statement issued by Dr. Bapigaan William Audu, the chairman of the association, and Dr. Istifanus Bintum, the public relations officer, the arrest was made in collaboration with the Plateau State Ministry of Health.


The statement revealed that the Plateau State NMA, working alongside the State Ministry of Health, conducted a covert investigation leading to the arrest of the fake doctor who was performing dubious activities in schools and places of worship across the state.

“The impostor, who goes by the name George Ossai, was arrested on Monday, March 18, 2024, within Jos metropolis and was transferred to the CID, Police Headquarters Jos, the next day. The NMA has given a statement to the police regarding the matter, while further investigations are ongoing.

The NMA, therefore, called on members of the public to report any suspected fake doctor to the NMA Plateau State, adding that complaints can also be made to the Inspectorate Unit within the State Ministry of Health Headquarters, Plateau State Secretariat Jos.

Furthermore, the association commended the police for their support and advised the public to seek medical assistance only from licensed health professionals in recognized healthcare facilities rather than from individuals selling unauthorized medicines or claiming to be medical practitioners.
It commended the police for their cooperation and enjoined the public to always seek the services of health professionals within the confines of a health facility (clinic, hospital, or medical center) rather than engaging anyone selling ‘medicines’ or claiming to be a medical doctor.

The NMA pledged to work hand in hand with the government and citizens to ensure the provision of efficient and effective healthcare services to safeguard the wellbeing of Nigerians and combat the activities of deceitful individuals who misuse the medical profession to exploit the innocent public and undermine the esteemed reputation and professionalism of doctors.
