NOTAP, PZ Cussons Upgrade UNIJOS Chemistry Laboratory to Boost Research Capacity

The National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion (NOTAP), in collaboration with PZ Cussons Nigeria Plc, has upgraded the Chemistry laboratory at the University of Jos to strengthen Nigeria’s research capacity and reduce dependence on foreign laboratories for industrial analysis.

The upgraded facility was officially commissioned on Tuesday by the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji, who was represented by the Director-General of NOTAP, Dr. Obiageli Amadiobi.

Speaking at the event, Amadiobi emphasized the critical role of well-equipped laboratories in driving innovation and scientific progress.

She noted that many research institutions in Nigeria struggle with inadequate facilities, necessitating periodic upgrades to ensure laboratories remain relevant for industrial and academic needs.

Any research that will produce meaningful results must pass through rigorous laboratory processes, and these facilities must stand the test of time. Through NOTAP’s Laboratory Upgrade Program, we are ensuring that research conducted by multinational companies can now be done in Nigeria,” she stated.

She added that strengthening local research capacity is fundamental to national development, as scientific breakthroughs rely on a conducive environment and modern equipment.

Similarly, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos, Professor Tanko Ishaya, described the laboratory upgrade as a major milestone in the university’s drive for excellence in research and innovation. He assured that the institution would maximize the facility for advanced studies and industry collaboration.

This is a joyous moment for us. Universities worldwide face infrastructural deficits, but this intervention from NOTAP gives us hope for a better future. With this upgrade, we now have a chemistry laboratory capable of handling a wide range of chemical analyses within the university,”he said.

He further highlighted the significance of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UNIJOS, NOTAP, and PZ Cussons, stressing that it solidifies the university’s commitment to fostering research, innovation, and industry-academia partnerships.

With the University of Jos becoming the eighth beneficiary of this initiative, two more universities are expected to receive similar upgrades in the near future.
