Prof. Shedrack Gaya Best, the new Vice Chancellor of Plateau State University, Bokkos, has vowed to place students at the heart of his administration, unveiling plans for improved hostels, 24-hour internet access, and essential healthcare services to create a more conducive learning environment.
Speaking during his first official appearance on Monday (July 28, 2025), after his appointment on July 24, Prof. Best reassured students that their welfare would be his guiding priority as he leads the institution into a new phase of growth and innovation.
“We are hoping to build more hostels and implement additional amenities to ensure a conducive learning environment. By the next academic session, students will benefit from 24-hour internet services on campus,” he promised, adding that doctors and nurses will be employed to provide medical services that were previously lacking.
The Vice Chancellor also announced the transition of the Department of Mass Communications into a full-fledged faculty — one of Nigeria’s first — with expanded academic programs once the new building is completed.
“In October 2025, we will launch programs in Medicine and Pharmaceutical Sciences, and contracts will soon be awarded for the construction of their respective buildings,” he stated.
Prof. Best further revealed that PLASU would broaden its academic offerings, introducing Statistics, Religious and Cultural Studies, and other courses under the Faculty of Arts, while strengthening existing programs to meet the evolving needs of students.
Addressing concerns about the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NEL Fund), the Vice Chancellor clarified that the scheme was strictly for current students, following the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission’s (ICPC) directive to avoid disbursing funds to graduates.
His commitment was warmly received by the Students Union Government (SUG) President, Comrade Donald Yaksuk Doedel, and Rt. Hon. David Itse, President of the National Association of Plateau State Students (NAPSS), who both praised Prof. Best’s student-focused vision and pledged the support of the student body.
With these assurances, Plateau State University anticipates a period of transformation under Prof. Best’s leadership, driven by a clear mission to enhance student life, expand academic horizons, and position PLASU as one of Nigeria’s leading universities.
