Plateau journalists have been urged to uphold ethical standards and security considerations in reporting military operations, ensuring responsible media coverage that fosters national unity and public trust.
Maj.-Gen. A.E. Abubakar, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3rd Armored Division and Commander of Operation Safe Haven (OPSH), highlighted this during a media training organized by the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Plateau State in collaboration with OPSH.
Represented by Brig.-Gen. M.O. Agbi, Chief of Staff of OPSH, Abubakar emphasized that while the media has a duty to inform the public, safeguarding sensitive operational details is equally critical.
“We are not just asking for caution; we are calling for a partnership, Journalists have the power to shape public perception of military operations, and with that comes the responsibility to ensure that reporting does not jeopardize lives or compromise operational success.” he said
The one-day training, themed “Ethics and Security Considerations in Media Coverage of Military Operations,”explored practical approaches to ethical reporting in conflict and security situations.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Polycarp Auta, Chairman of the NUJ Correspondents’ Chapel, Plateau State, underscored the importance of the training in helping journalists navigate the dual challenges of maintaining transparency while protecting national security.
“Journalists play a pivotal role in conflict zones, and this training equips them with the tools to ensure their work promotes peace without compromising operational security,” Auta noted.

One of the key speakers, Major Aliyu Danja, Acting Director of Public Relations, 3 Division, shed light on the complexities of military operations and their implications for media coverage.
“Understanding military structures is not just useful; it is essential for effective reporting
“Journalists need to appreciate the nuances of offensive, defensive, and counterinsurgency operations to ensure their reports are accurate and contextual.” he explained.
Danja also called for the establishment of clear protocols for media engagement with the military and stressed the importance of using digital platforms to enhance transparency while safeguarding sensitive information.
The session also addressed the ethical challenges journalists face while reporting on security issues.

Mr. Ephraim Sheyin, former Editor-in-Chief of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), highlighted the risks of sensationalism, warning that exaggerated coverage of terrorism could inadvertently empower insurgents.
“The media has a responsibility to prioritize peacebuilding and avoid narratives that fuel fear or conflict.
“At the same time, journalists must protect their sources and navigate the fine line between reporting and maintaining confidentiality in volatile situations.” Sheyin remarked.
The event brought together journalists, security operatives, and other stakeholders, creating a platform for dialogue on how both sectors can work together to achieve common goals. Participants agreed on the need for continuous capacity building for journalists and better communication between the military and the media.
