Building Collapse: UNIJOS Don Calls for Enforcement of Nigerian Building Code

A Professor of Building Construction Management at the University of Jos, Prof. Jurbe Molwus, has called on the government at all levels to enforce strict compliance with the Nigerian building code to address the rising cases of building collapse in the country.

Prof. Molwus made this appeal during his inaugural lecture titled “Curbing Building Collapse and Sick Building Syndrome: The Nexus Between Structures and Production Management,” which marked the 110th in the UNIJOS inaugural lecture series.

He highlighted poor supervision, substandard materials, improper site selection, and disregard for the Nigerian building code as the leading causes of building collapses.

He warned that the use of low-quality materials poses serious risks to structural stability, stressing the importance of strict adherence to construction standards.

The federal government must ensure the nationwide implementation of the Nigerian building code,” Prof. Molwus stated, adding that failure to comply could lead to catastrophic consequences during or after construction.

The UNIJOS don also pointed to the neglect of ethical practices, poor teamwork, and inadequate oversight as significant contributors to the problem.

He urged professionals in the construction industry to prioritize safety and quality over profit while emphasizing the need for regular inspections and maintenance to ensure structural integrity.

“The structural system of a building comprises components that act together to transfer load and maintain stability,” he explained, underscoring the importance of understanding how these elements work.

Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Joash Amopitan, commended Prof. Molwus for his lecture and called for increased oversight in the building sector.

“Building collapse has become a growing concern in our society, claiming lives, causing injuries, and destroying property,” Prof. Amopitan noted.

He emphasized the dangers posed by quackery and the sale of substandard materials, calling for stricter regulation.

The lecture comes in the wake of the tragic collapse of the All Saints Academy College building in Jos on July 12, 2024, which claimed over 22 lives and left more than 120 students trapped.

The incident has intensified calls for stricter enforcement of building codes to prevent further tragedies.

Prof. Molwus’ lecture served as a timely reminder of the urgent need for collective action to ensure safer buildings and protect lives.
