The Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB) has inducted a new set of graduate members, emphasizing the need for professionalism, innovation, and accountability in the construction industry.

The 5th Induction and Oath-Taking Ceremony, hosted by the University of Jos (UNIJOS) Department of Building, brought together industry experts, academics, and policymakers to discuss the evolving role of builders in national development.

Speaking at the event, the Chief of Staff to the Plateau State Governor, Engr. Jeremiah Satmack, highlighted the increasing recognition of builders in the industry. He encouraged the inductees to uphold ethical standards and leverage their skills for national growth.

The knowledge you have acquired here is enough to sell you to the world. Wherever you find yourselves, be good ambassadors of this institution, uphold professionalism, and never compromise on standards,” he said.

He assured the institution of the government’s commitment to supporting the Building Department while addressing industry challenges, including arbitration issues, and expanding career opportunities for graduates.

Representing the Vice-Chancellor of UNIJOS, Professor Tanko Ishaya, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Professor Rahila Gowon, commended the Department of Building for securing accreditation from the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON).

She noted that the program aligns with both academic and professional requirements, equipping students with the necessary expertise for career advancement.

“Our graduates are trained in one of the best Building departments, not just in Nigeria but globally. With the right skills and knowledge, they are well-equipped to contribute meaningfully to national development,” she stated.

Delivering a keynote address titled “The Budding Builder and the Society,” Bldr. D.D. Jambol, FNIOB, PPNIOB, stressed the importance of ethical practice, continuous learning, and adherence to industry standards.

He urged young professionals to embrace their role in ensuring structural safety, environmental sustainability, and economic progress.

“Building is more than erecting structures; it is a responsibility to society. Your credibility will be defined by the quality of your work, ethical decisions, and commitment to lifelong learning,” Jambol stated.

He also pointed out key industry challenges, such as weak regulatory frameworks and inadequate enforcement of standards, urging the new inductees to see these as opportunities to innovate and excel in areas such as consulting, project management, real estate, and sustainable construction.

The National President of NIOB, Bldr. Sir Alderton Ewa Ewa, FNIOB, welcomed the new members and commended UNIJOS and the Plateau State Chapter of NIOB for their role in training professionals.

He emphasized the need for mentorship, technological advancements, and vocational training to empower young builders.

“A budding builder is more than just an apprentice; they embody innovation and ambition. Our society must nurture their potential by providing strong vocational training, mentorship, and opportunities to apply their skills,” he remarked.

The event featured the administration of the professional oath, the presentation of membership certificates, and merit awards recognizing outstanding contributions to the building profession.
