The Federal College of Education in Pankshin, Plateau State, has been elevated to the Federal University of Education, accompanied by a substantial take-off grant of N10 billion.
During the unveiling ceremony of the newly established university, Hon. Yusuf Gagdi, the Chairman of the House Representatives Committee on Navy and the bill’s sponsor for the college’s transition, praised President Bola Tinubu for making this milestone possible.
Hon. Gagdi expressed gratitude to all supporters throughout the process, emphasizing that the transition was a collective endeavor. He called on all relevant stakeholders in the state to collaborate in elevating the university to an esteemed institution recognized beyond national borders.
He urged caution against unnecessary political maneuvering concerning the university’s leadership, highlighting that, as a fledgling institution, it deserves optimal support for its development.
“The federal government has approved the sum of N10 billion as a take-off grant for this university; its growth should be a collective responsibility; all stakeholders should be involved. The state government should not view it merely as a federal institution but as its own child, which must be nurtured,” he stated.
Gagdi recounted the obstacles faced during the transition process, mentioning attempts to thwart the college’s upgrade. He credited lobbying efforts and the understanding of the presidency for the eventual signing of the bill by former President Muhammadu Buhari.
“I have surrendered myself to the people of this constituency, and I will not relent in my efforts toward uplifting the standard of living and wellbeing of my people. Attempts were made to frustrate the bill along the line, but through lobbying, we got it signed”.
“But with full transition today, I have been vindicated; initially, some people thought I was using it for politics. But today it has become a reality; I will not relent in bringing the dividend of democracy to my constituency. Any politician that does not want the Central Zone, especially its capital, Pankshin, to develop doesn’t mean well for the zone and the state as a whole.”
Hon. Gagdi, who represents the Pankshin, Kanke, and Kanam federal constituency in Plateau State, refuted claims that he is supporting a particular individual for the position of the university’s inaugural vice-chancellor, asserting that his primary concern is the institution’s growth, rather than the appointment of its leaders.
“I am appealing to the political class to keep me out of the blackmail; I am not interested in who becomes anything. Let God give us the best,” he remarked.
Dr. Folorunsho Olumoko, the Chairman of the Governing Council of the University, urged the ministerial assessment committee to conduct a thorough evaluation and ensure the necessary facilities are established for the university’s successful launch.
“Your role is important for the successful takeover of this university; your dedication and expertise are very paramount in this regard. I therefore charge you to be meticulous in the process of your assignment for the purpose of academic excellence through research initiatives,” he stated.
Senator Diket Plang, representing Plateau Central, praised Hon. Gagdi for his efforts in making the university a reality and emphasized that it is now the responsibility of other stakeholders to nurture the institution.
