A coalition known as the APC Like Minds Political Movement in Plateau State has come to the defense of Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, who has been nominated as the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction.
This response comes in light of criticisms levied by a faction identifying itself as the Progressive Volunteers for Bola Tinubu, Plateau State Chapter.
During a press conference held at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat in Jos on Tuesday, the Like Minds Movement, led by Shehu Bala Usman, a former chairman of Jos North local government and the group’s convener, characterized the opposition’s claims as “baseless and devoid of any valid argument.”
Usman stated, “There is no record of a group called APC Progressive Volunteers for Tinubu within the APC since 2015. If they truly exist, they should stop hiding behind a faceless name.”
The Progressive Volunteers had previously contended that Yilwatda’s nomination should have been awarded to a woman.
However, the APC Like Minds dismissed this reasoning as irrelevant, underscoring the pressing need for effective and committed leadership in the ministry.
They highlighted Yilwatda’s noteworthy contributions, particularly during his time as INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in Benue State, where he pioneered the BVAS machine initiative aimed at reducing electoral malpractice.
“The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction was created to serve Nigeria’s humanitarian needs and alleviate poverty.
“Prof Nentawe has consistently shown the competence, diligence, and initiatives necessary for such a role. His commitment to excellence is not in question.
“Prof Nentawe distinguished himself through his work in Benue, which significantly reduced electoral fraud. His vision and innovation brought the BVAS machine to life, a solution that set new standards for electoral integrity,” Usman asserted.
Furthermore, the group praised Yilwatda’s international credentials, highlighting his collaboration with the United Nations and various global development organizations.
“His international experience has not only brought him respect but has also earned the admiration of Plateau citizens and Nigerians in the diaspora. His appointment reflects President Tinubu’s commitment to merit-based selections and Nigeria’s future”.
In addressing the intentions of the Progressive Volunteers, the group stated, “We reject any attempt to politicize Professor Nentawe’s agenda. Those opposing him are aware of the significant value he will add to the renewed hope agenda, which is precisely why they seek to undermine him.”
