GSS Mangun Upgraded to Federal College with 1.5bn Naira Boost

In a significant milestone for education in Plateau State, the Government Science Secondary School (GSS) Mangun, which has served the Mangu Local Government Area for nearly five decades, has now been officially transformed into the Federal Government Science and Technical College Mangun.

Backed by an allocation of 1.5 billion Naira, this initiative aims to provide modern facilities and a robust technical education program to foster economic development within the community.

The project symbolizes a unified effort between Hon. Dr. Ishaya David Lalu, the member representing the Mangu/Bokkos constituency in the House of Representatives, and Plateau State Governor Barr Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang.

During the flag-off ceremony, Dr. Lalu shared insights into the project’s evolution, reflecting on the obstacles and achievements experienced along the way from its initial conception to actualization.

“For our federal constituency, we began this journey as a mere idea, never imagining it would come to fruition.To me, politics is like a game, a place to establish good relationships rather than turn it into a ‘do-or-die’ affair.” he said.

Dr. Lalu also acknowledged the dedication of various stakeholders who played instrumental roles in the campaign for the school’s federalization, noting that previous political factors had obstructed earlier opportunities.

“Previous political circumstances had diverted the opportunity.When I eventually contested the election, I promptly wrote to the ministry, advocating for the school to be situated in Mangun, based on the federal character principle.

“The culmination of these efforts came after my recent meeting with the minister, where I presented a strong case for Mangun. With Governor Mutfwang’s personal intervention, the final decision was made in favor of Mangun, a choice I consider a unifying achievement

“This achievement goes beyond party lines; it is a product of unity, showing what we can accomplish for our community by working together,” he stressed.

Speaking on behalf of Governor Mutfwang, Honorable Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development Joshua Ubandoma Laven expressed appreciation to all stakeholders, highlighting hon. Dr. Lalu’s relentless advocacy for the project prior to the governor’s involvement.

He stated. “Our honorable member has tirelessly advocated for this project long before the governor’s involvement, but it was through His Excellency’s support that the project truly came to life

“This technical institution will be a center for advancing technical and scientific knowledge, preparing our young people to contribute meaningfully to society.”

Laven also noted that the institution will feature modern amenities, including an e-library and laboratories for various sciences, providing students with crucial resources for a comprehensive education.

He conveyed enthusiasm for the impending handover ceremony, where the governor will officially transfer the institution to the federal government. “This achievement is not about politics but about unity and governance. It demonstrates what can be accomplished when all parties work together with a common goal,” he remarked

In a goodwill message, Mr. Kola Osundeyi from the Federal Ministry of Education commended the collaborative efforts that facilitated the college upgrade.

Representing the education sector, he reiterated the ministry’s commitment to establishing robust technical institutions across the states.

Osundeyi emphasized the ministry’s mission to broaden skills development opportunities nationwide and assured attendees that necessary infrastructure would be in place by next year for students to commence their studies.

Additionally, Arc Maimuna Umar, FNIA, Head of the Physical Planning Units at the National Secondary School Education Commission, stressed the importance of the intervention project initiated by Dr. Lalu.

She highlighted the establishment of a fully furnished ICT library and a comprehensive laboratory block, which will significantly enhance the academic environment.

Umar also disclosed that a resident consultant has been appointed to ensure quality and adherence to standards during the construction process.

Expressing gratitude to community leaders and stakeholders, she emphasized their vital role in fostering a thriving educational environment.

In a show of support, Sunday Briggs, National President of the Mangun Old Students Association (MAOSA), commended the collaboration between the federal and state governments and recognized Hon. Dr. Lalu’s efforts.

He confirmed the alumni association’s dedication to closely monitoring the project, ensuring that resources are effectively utilized for the benefit of future students.
