The Plateau State Government has unveiled the maiden edition of the Plateau State Science, Technology and Innovation Festival, PLASSTIFEST, as part of efforts to promote innovation, create employment opportunities and attract investors to the state.
The Commissioner for Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr Cletus Bako Shurkuk, disclosed this during a press briefing ahead of the festival scheduled to hold from June 1 to 3, 2026, at Crispan Suites and Event Centre, Jos.
Shurkuk described the initiative as a landmark platform aimed at showcasing Plateau’s creativity, connecting innovators with investors and positioning the state as a hub for science, technology and entrepreneurship in Nigeria.
According to him, the festival, themed “Reimagining Plateau: Driving Innovation and Technology for a Smarter and Sustainable Future,” is designed to harness the potential of the state’s youth population and drive sustainable economic growth through innovation.
He noted that Plateau State faces challenges in education, agriculture, mining, youth unemployment and infrastructure development, but said the government believes science and technology can provide practical solutions to improve livelihoods and stimulate development.
“The festival is not merely an event; it is a declaration that Plateau State is ready to take its rightful place as a hub of innovation, entrepreneurship and technological advancement in Nigeria,” he said.
The commissioner explained that the festival would focus on improving the quality of life of citizens, creating jobs for youths, strengthening education and research, promoting digital inclusion and building a sustainable ecosystem where startups can thrive.
He added that the event would feature exhibitions by local innovato7rs and startups, keynote addresses, panel discussions, innovation awards and networking sessions aimed at connecting innovators with investors, mentors and development partners.
Shurkuk further disclosed that the Honourable Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr Kingsley Tochukwu Udeh, and the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Finance Incorporated, MOFI, are expected to attend the event, a development he said reflects growing federal support for Plateau’s innovation agenda.
According to him, PLASSTIFEST is designed as a year-long initiative that will continue beyond the launch through mentorship programmes, innovation engagements and community outreach activities.
He said the initiative aligns with the vision of Governor Caleb Mutfwang to reposition Plateau State for economic growth and sustainable development through innovation and technology.
The commissioner called on students, entrepreneurs, researchers, investors and members of the public to participate actively in the festival, describing it as an opportunity to redefine the future of Plateau State through creativity and innovation.
