With Christmas just days away, the Plateau State Police Command has implemented strict security measures across the state to ensure a peaceful festive season.
The measures, which include movement restrictions and activity bans, are focused on five local government areas: Bassa, Barkin Ladi, Bokkos, Mangu, and Riyom.
Announcing the measures during a stakeholders’ meeting at the Police Officers’ Mess in Jos, Commissioner of Police Emmanuel Olugbemiga Adesina revealed that the restrictions, effective from December 23, 2024, to January 3, 2025, will limit movement from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. daily in the affected areas.
“Additionally, nightclubs in these local government areas will remain closed throughout the period, while activities such as night grazing, night farming, and mining operations are also prohibited,” CP Adesina stated.
He emphasized that the measures aim to eliminate opportunities for criminal activity during the celebrations.
The Commissioner, represented by Deputy Commissioner of Police Sheikh Adamu of the Criminal Investigation Department, explained that the decision followed consultations with traditional rulers, religious leaders, and other stakeholders.
He pointed to last year’s tragic events in Mangu and Bokkos, where lives were lost and properties worth millions destroyed, as a driving force behind the proactive measures.
In the Jos-Bukuru metropolis, the command has imposed a ban on motorcycles and tricycles on December 25, 26, and January 1, 2025. Fireworks, commonly referred to as “knockouts,” are also prohibited statewide to prevent panic and confusion that could be exploited by criminal elements.
CP Adesina urged Plateau residents to cooperate with security agencies, noting that all unions and associations had been duly informed about the directives.
“These policies are not intended to inconvenience anyone but to ensure the safety and security of all Plateau residents during this festive period,” he said.
He also called on parents and guardians to caution their wards against acts that could disrupt peaceful coexistence, wishing Christians a joyous Christmas and a safe New Year celebration.
The police assured the public of massive deployments to key flashpoints and ongoing collaboration with other security agencies to maintain peace and order throughout the festivities.
