The Coalition of Youth Leaders of Plateau Communities has publicly distanced itself from the planned nationwide protests organized by unidentified youth groups, citing vague motives and the potential for civil unrest.
Speaking during a press conference at the NUJ Press Centre in Jos, Pololis Gyang, the Youth Leader of Rock Haven, shared the coalition’s stance, underscoring their dedication to the welfare of Plateau communities.
“We in Plateau State wish to unequivocally dissociate ourselves from the anticipated protest due to the ambiguous and unclear circumstances surrounding it,” he said.
While acknowledging the economic hardships faced by their communities, the youth leaders expressed their empathy for those grappling with financial difficulties.
“We recognize the devastating impact of the current hardship, pain, and distress our people are enduring. Many have lost their sources of livelihood, and some cannot even provide for themselves and their families.”
Despite understanding the grievances that have prompted the call for protests, the coalition raised alarms about the potential hidden agendas of the protest organizers.
“It is impossible for a protest of the proposed scale to be devoid of sponsors, just as it is inconceivable to have smoke without fire. Why have the sponsors of this protest remained hidden and unknown?” he questioned.
Additionally, Gyang warned about the risks of unrest, stating, “We have witnessed numerous tensions leading to the loss of lives and properties. We must do everything possible to avoid a repeat of such ugly incidents. We are aware of plots to loot and destroy certain markets, businesses, and critical infrastructure within the state capital.”
The coalition urged the Federal Government to take action on the economic challenges affecting the nation and pledged to engage in constructive dialogue to seek solutions. They emphasized their commitment to peace and stability in Plateau State.
“We are ready and determined to engage the government at all levels in finding lasting solutions to our problems. We choose not to participate in protests that may plunge our state into anarchy, chaos, and untold hardship, and resolve to pursue this in good conscience for the peace and progress of our state and the nation at large.”
