As part of efforts to strengthen professional collaboration and promote wellness among accountants, four major professional accounting bodies — the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN), the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN), and the Chartered Institute of Forensics and Certified Fraud Investigators of Nigeria (CIFCFIN) — came together in Jos to celebrate the 2025 International Accounting Day.
The event, which featured a health walk through major streets of Jos, brought together accountants from both the public and private sectors in a display of unity and commitment to the core values of integrity, professionalism, and ethical financial management.
Speaking during the event, the Chairman of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) in Plateau State, Mr Pam Musa Chung, said the day was set aside globally to celebrate the accounting profession and recognise its role in economic growth and financial accountability.
“We want to thank God for what we can see today. We are celebrating International Accounting Day — a day set aside to celebrate the accounting profession globally. It’s not just happening here in Plateau State; it’s taking place all over the world.
“You can see the professional accounting bodies — ICAN, ANAN, CIFCFIN, and CITN — coming together to celebrate this day. It’s our way of showing that we are proud of the accounting profession and proud to be accountants.” He said
He explained that the event also served as a reminder of the sacrifices made by the founding fathers of the profession and as a platform to promote healthy living among members.
“The significance of this celebration is to tell the world about accountants and the importance of accounting. It’s also a day to remember and appreciate the efforts of our founding fathers — both globally and here in Nigeria — who made sacrifices to build the profession.
” We also want to remind society of who accountants are and the critical role we play in the community. That’s why we decided to mark the day with a health walk. As accountants, we are generally very busy people, but today we have chosen to step away from our calculators, computers, and ledgers to take part in something different — to promote health and wellness among our members, because health is wealth.” He added
In his remarks, the Executive Chairman of the Plateau State Internal Revenue Service (PSIRS), Mr. Jim Pam Wayas, described the celebration as a legacy event that underscores the relevance of accountants in both government and the private sector.
He said: “Around this time every year, particularly on the 10th of November, the world marks International Accounting Day. Today, coincidentally, we are celebrating this global event here in Jos. It is a gathering of all professional accounting bodies coming together to celebrate this wonderful day.
This day traces its origin back to 1939 when Luca Pacioli, regarded as the father of accounting, introduced the principle of double-entry bookkeeping. So, we are celebrating not just a profession, but a legacy — to the glory of God and for the benefit of humanity.”
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Chartered Institute of Forensics and Certified Fraud Investigators of Nigeria (CIFCFIN), Tony Garba, described the 2025 edition as historic, being the first time all four professional bodies would jointly host the celebration in Plateau State.
The Chairman of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN), Andy Udah, commended the organisers and the unity demonstrated among all the participating professional bodies.
He said the collaboration reflects a shared vision of advancing professional excellence and promoting continuous learning, ethics, and wellness within the accounting community.
The 2025 International Accounting Day celebration formed part of a global observance recognizing the contributions of accountants to good governance, financial stability, and economic growth.
