NIPOST Plateau Seeks Government Support to Strengthen Operations

The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) in Plateau State has appealed for government support to tackle challenges affecting its operations and to strengthen postal services across the state.

The call was made in Jos during the commemoration of this year’s World Post Day, which focused on the theme “Post for People: Local Service, Global Reach.”

Speaking at the event, the Plateau State Postal Manager, Akaahar Michael, said NIPOST remains a vital link in facilitating communication, logistics, and e-commerce despite the decline in personal letter writing and the growth of digital technology.

He said the postal service has continued to evolve by adopting modern systems and expanding into new areas of operation.

Nowadays, people often ask if NIPOST still exists — largely because personal letter writing has significantly declined worldwide. However, with technological advancements, personal letters have reduced, but business letters are actually on the rise,” he said.

You can now complete business transactions online, and the post still plays a vital role in the delivery of those goods and documents. What has truly helped the postal industry is modern tracking systems.

In the past, when you sent a letter or parcel, you had to wait endlessly without knowing if it was delivered. Today, we can track every item from point of origin to destination.”

Mike explained that the postal service has diversified beyond traditional mail delivery, now providing logistics services for organizations such as JAMB and other educational bodies, as well as affordable parcel transport for individuals relocating within the country.

He identified insecurity and poor road infrastructure as major challenges limiting postal operations in some parts of Plateau, urging government intervention to improve road conditions and enhance safety for postal workers.

Also speaking, the District Stock Manager of NIPOST, Sani Aminu, called for greater government support to boost staff welfare and create more public awareness about NIPOST’s ongoing operations.

He said the postal system remains relevant in the digital age through its roles in logistics, e-commerce delivery, and stamp duty collection — all of which contribute to national revenue.

Aminu added that with improved infrastructure and government attention, NIPOST could further strengthen its efficiency and service delivery across the state.

News on the Plateau reports that World Post Day is celebrated annually on October 9 to commemorate the establishment of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1874 in Switzerland. The day highlights the vital role of postal services in global communication and development, as well as their continued relevance in connecting communities worldwide.
