Vwang District Peace Football Tournament Begins, Focus on Youth Talent Discovery

Director of Press and Public Affairs to the Governor, Dr. Gyang Bere

The second edition of the Vwang District Unity and Peace Football Tournament has commenced with renewed focus on identifying and developing young football talent capable of competing beyond Plateau State and outside Nigeria.

The opening ceremony held on Monday at the Vwang Central Football Field saw defending champions, Turu United, defeat last year’s runners-up, Chigwai FC, by a lone goal to nil.

Speaking during the kickoff, the sponsor of the tournament and Director of Press and Public Affairs to the Governor, Dr. Gyang Bere, said the initiative was deliberately designed not only for competition but also as a platform to discover raw talent and create opportunities for young people.

According to him, “this is not a rivalry — it is a friendly football encounter that gives us the opportunity to identify raw talent. From last year’s edition, some players have already been discovered, and today they are pursuing opportunities because of this platform.”

He further expressed optimism that more promising players would emerge from this year’s edition.

We believe that, by God’s grace, many more talents will be identified this year — to play not only outside Plateau State, but outside Nigeria,” he said.

Dr. Bere noted that the tournament has received official endorsement from the Governor of Plateau State, His Excellency Barrister Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang.

Plateau has found in him a leader who listens, a reformer who acts, and a statesman who envisions a brighter future. He is fearless, focused, and rooted in the belief that a united people can achieve the extraordinary,” he stated.

While addressing participating teams, he urged players to maintain discipline and avoid emotional or violent conduct, noting that opportunities could be tied to their performance and behaviour.

So I encourage all players: let us play fair, play with discipline, and showcase your talent. Do not allow emotions or rivalry to cause conflict. Play responsibly, because your future may depend on how you conduct yourself today,” he added.

Goodwill messages were delivered by the Chairman of Plateau State Football Association, Prince Suleiman Yahaya Kwande; Secretary of Jos South LGA, Da Sunday Dagwom; former Registrar of Plateau State Polytechnic, Iliya Balak; and Chairman of the organising committee, Joseph Gyang, among others.

Speakers commended Dr. Bere for sustaining the platform and supporting emerging football talent in Vwang and Plateau State.

The tournament, expected to run for one month, will conclude with the grand finale scheduled for January 3, 2026.
