Governor Caleb Mutfwang has emphasized sports as a cornerstone for fostering peace, unity, and nurturing young talents in Plateau State.
This was affirmed by his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Dr. Gyang Bere, during the kick-off of a peace and unity football tournament in Vwang District, Jos South LGA, on Saturday.
Dr. Bere, who sponsored the tournament, explained that it aligns with the governor’s vision of creating opportunities for the youth to explore their potential.
He stated, “The primary aim of this initiative is to uncover and nurture footballing talents within our community.
“Many of our youths possess exceptional abilities but have lacked the platforms and mentorship to showcase their skills beyond the district. Today, we take a bold step toward bridging that gap.”
He further noted that the tournament serves as more than just a sporting event, highlighting its role in addressing critical societal challenges such as drug abuse and promoting values of selflessness, unity, and charity.
“Through this tournament, we seek to instill virtues that are essential for building a cohesive and progressive community,” he added.

Hon. Suleiman Kwande, Chairman of the Plateau State Football Association (PFA), lauded Dr. Bere for the initiative and urged participating teams to play by the rules.
He emphasized that football not only unites people but also offers a pathway to lucrative career opportunities.
Similarly, the Chairman of the Traditional Council of Vwang District, His Royal Highness Da Gyang Balak, expressed optimism about the impact of the tournament, describing it as a step toward unifying the community and addressing the aspirations of the youth for a better future.
During the event, Dr. Bere presented brand-new jerseys and footballs to all participating teams. In the opening match, Wunato FC Academy secured a 1-0 victory over Vwang Central FC, earning three points.
The tournament is expected to continue in the coming weeks, with local teams competing for the championship and showcasing their talents.
