Plateau State has recorded its highest internally generated revenue (IGR) in history, generating ₦45.1 billion in 2025 and surpassing the ₦40 billion mark for the first time.
The Executive Chairman of the Plateau State Internal Revenue Service (PSIRS) disclosed this while presenting the Service’s performance review, describing the figure as a major milestone in the state’s revenue trajectory.
According to him, the ₦45.1 billion generated in 2025 was achieved against a target of ₦52.3 billion, representing an 86.2 percent performance rate. He explained that the achievement did not happen overnight but was the result of steady growth recorded over the past three years.
“In 2025, which just concluded last year, our target was ₦52.3 billion, and we generated ₦45.1 billion. This is the first time we crossed the ₦40 billion mark.
“Coming from where we are coming from, if you take the last three years, in 2022 we only met 51 percent of the budget. In 2023 we met 90 percent. In 2024 it was about 80 percent. But in 2025 we achieved 86.2 percent of the budget,” he stated.
A breakdown of the figures shows a steady upward trend in the state’s revenue performance. In 2022, Plateau State generated ₦15.9 billion against a budget target of over ₦24 billion. In 2023, revenue rose significantly, with ₦25.8 billion generated against a ₦28.6 billion target. By 2024, the target moved higher, and ₦31.1 billion was realised, marking the first time the state crossed into the ₦30 billion range.
Providing further insight into the performance of the Revenue Service itself, the Chairman noted that PSIRS recorded its strongest outing since inception in 2025.
“For the Plateau State Internal Revenue Service, the budget in 2025 was ₦34 billion, and we generated ₦32 billion. That is about 94 percent. This is the first time the Service has achieved that level of performance since it was created,” he said.
He added that in 2022, the Service generated ₦13.1 billion against a target of ₦18.4 billion, representing about 71 percent performance. In 2023, it generated ₦17 billion out of ₦20 billion, achieving 85 percent. In 2024, it realised ₦21 billion against a ₦27 billion target before recording the historic 94 percent performance in 2025.
The Chairman attributed the consistent improvement to deliberate institutional reforms, including the centralisation and automation of revenue processes across the state.
He emphasised that the revenue growth was not solely the work of the Service but also the result of improved taxpayer compliance and collaboration with other revenue-generating agencies and stakeholders.
“We have centralized all our processes. We have automated all our processes. There are no leakages. There is no cash collection. Plateau is among the eight states in the federation that were highlighted as having no cash collection anywhere.
“The job of collecting the ₦45.1 billion we did is not the job of PSIRS alone. There is collaboration with other key stakeholders, and we give credit to our taxpayers because it is not all about us. It is about the people who comply,” he noted.
With the latest performance, Plateau State has firmly established a new revenue benchmark, moving from the ₦20 billion range just a few years ago to consistently posting figures above ₦30 billion and now beyond ₦40 billion, signalling what officials describe as a sustained upward trajectory in the state’s internally generated revenue.
